Women in Business: Layla Metcalfe

NAME: LAYLA METCALFE
BUSINESS/BRAND: Layla Metcalfe - Naturopath
WHERE ARE YOU BASED: Manly Corso, Northern Beaches Sydney

WHY THIS? - naturopathy

I fell into Naturopathy accidentally, but very fortunately, because I absolutely love what I do!

Being able to educate, support and guide people through their health is a pleasure and a skill I am proud to be learning to master.
I have a very curious mind and am fascinated by the way people work/don't work, the human body, mind and it's innate ability to heal itself.
Couple that with a love of food and plant medicine, I feel like I'm doing the right thing.

I grew up with chronic health conditions and my parents threw everything they could at me (mainstream medication, hospital visits, healers, moving houses, scans and tests, food elimination etc )  and so I was exposed at an early age to understanding that the body can crash and burn but then heal and rebuild itself.
As an adult, I have also faced some tricky health challenges including a brain tumour and endometriosis. Both of which I chose to address primarily with natural medicine and in both experiences I have come up trumps. Sealing the deal that I am doing the right thing.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU?

I'm inspired by people doing the work. Whatever that looks like for them. I'm inspired by my patients every day.

I recently spent time in the Northern Territory with a group of Indigenous Australians who were all challenged with some pretty heavy health conditions and lifestyle habits that were not at all conducive to living very long. My time spent with them was to educate about nutrition and healthcare in an effort to get them off a cocktail of medications and junk food life. Everyone I worked with was 100% committed to making change and reversing the disease they had eaten their way into. And they did. Through detoxification and hard work. With 100% commitment. No complaining. No questioning. This is inspiring! Just doing the work that needs to be done.

WHO DO YOU HOPE TO INSPIRE?

I hope to inspire the patients I work with and my friends in the wider community to give 'being healthy' and living 10/10 a good crack.

I'm definitely far from being a superhero in health, but I give it a red hot go. I like to offer a naturopathic service that is real and easy to adopt to create a healthy change.

Education and knowledge is empowering and if I can share any of my wisdom to support others then another box is ticked to let me know I'm doing the right thing.

WHAT DO YOU DO THAT MAKES YOU FEEL THE BEST
VERSION OF YOURSELF?

don't do stress. Which sounds indulgent. But I have been crippled with illness from stress and so I do everything in my power to avoid stress affecting my life.

I walk every morning for a couple of hours. Not rain, hail or shine. Generally only shine. My morning walk ticks so many boxes in one fell swoop. On this walk I get the nature fix, the ocean fix, the coffee fix, sun, best friend and end up at work. This is a ritual I do everyday. Its medicinal. I have been doing the same thing for the last 10 years.

I go to comedy once a week for LOL's. I fast for a few days each month to keep health things in check and I keep my family within arms reach.
