Women in Business: Sasha White

The world of business can be a dog-eat-dog world which takes a strong person to succeed. And typically that strength is associated with masculinity.

We wanted to acknowledge and celebrate the strong women out there who are rocking their field and focus on lifting each other up.  A new feature on the Feather Drum Blog we hope you love reading these interviews and enjoy getting insights into the world of  running a business.

WHY THIS FURNITURE & TEXTILES?

Designing furniture and spaces makes me feel alive. I love the idea of creating something from nothing, working with natural materials and ultimately bringing something to life that has purpose and creates joy for people. The fact that I can do this alongside my husband Nathan and have our children along for the ride with us makes it all that much sweeter. I believe everyone is born on earth to create, its in our nature to learn, work and produce something fruitful - whether its creating delicious food, recipes, objects, architecture, finances, family, clothing, photography. We were each born to create and there's purpose within whatever that is. It took me a little while to figure out what I loved doing and I feel it is also always evolving…and that's what makes life so fun and interesting. For example, we never thought shop fit-outs was something we would do but it's now a major component to our business. Why this? Because we love it and there's purpose within it.

WHAT OR WHO INSPIRES YOU?

We are inspired by life - looking at our home and the day to day and what we need/want in there. Looking at an empty space is inspiring to us because it represents the possibility of creating something - and that is what we love to do - create! Lifestyle has a major influence on our designs. Our desire to live life simply and minimally has contributed to us creating furniture that fits within that lifestyle. To be honest, inspiration for design is everywhere. As a  business owner sometimes I just need a bit of inspiration to keep going. Its hard work running a business and the temptation to give in or give up can be overwhelming at times. Sometimes what we all need is just a bit of encouragement. Encouragement to stay on course, be authentic and continue your craft. Looking at other business owners and being real with each other about the struggles helps and inspires me to keep going.

WHO DO YOU HOPE TO INSPIRE?

First and foremost I want to inspire/encourage my children. My prayer is for them to grow up with a strong sense of self-worth, and for each of them to discover their own purpose.  To inspire anyone beyond that is an added bonus and a privilege.

WHAT DO YOU DO THAT MAKES YOU FEEL THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF?

To be honest I feel the best version of myself when it’s not about me. When I’m helping someone or spending quality time with my children and husband. We can get so stuck in our own minds about our own problems and difficulties but as soon as you step back and put others needs before your own you feel, well I feel, the best version of me.

WHAT’S COMING UP/NEW FOR MR & MRS WHITE?

We recently re-consolidated our shop/showroom together at  our Dee Why Head quarters. We are open 6 days a week where you can come browse our handcrafted furniture as well as see behind the scenes to where it is all made. We will be introducing a few new lines of furniture this year, specifically dining room tables. We recently just launched the ‘Barrel Table’, made from solid timber and inspired by the barrels they use to store wine. We also have some exciting shop fit out projects we are working on this year.
